Less Than A Week To Go

FIFA World Cup 2006

This is what it's all for, well that and the millions that will be made from sponsorship deals if the players have a good tournament, the World Cup itself.

Germany got the gig and in typical efficient fashion they've managed to build or re-build half the country's football stadia in the time it's taken Multiplex to dig a big hole in North West London and fill it with our hopes and dreams.

England's hopes and dreams rely, in the words of David, on a giraffe, a cripple and a schoolboy - Crouch, Rooney and Walcott. Well I'll state my claim here and now, England will reach the semi-finals.

In true World Cup fashion I'll be trying to watch as many games as possible and bring to you my reader a daily update on my thoughts on how the tournament is progressing. First off though is the ubiquitous all time XI, only included are the players I actually saw or have seen playing via the television set - so no Garrincha I'm afraid.

  • I have a little secret I'd like to tell you about the world cup.

A mate of mine heads up one of the corporate sponsors of the world cup and as part of the deal they have with Fifa they are allowed to take publicity shots with the cup.

Anyway, the day it was flown in to the country for his shots they needed a safe house to store it. Now it turns out that they don't tend to store it in what you'd recognise as a safe, they tend to store it with huge amunts of security in an unlikely location.

Knowing this, my mate cheekily suggested they use his house to store it overnight before it was flown back. And unbelievably they went for it.

That night all of my mates piled round his house for photos and such like, so I can proudly say I've actualy had the world cup in my hands which is more than even Rooney can say as he's got a superstition about touchin cups before they're won.
