It's Finally Here

As Sepp Herberger famously said "nach dem Spiel ist vor dem Spiel" ("after the game is before the game"). ...and here we are nearly four years after Yokohama ready to begin the greatest sporting spectacle on earth.

After two years of huffing and puffing, but more of Fat Frank as the tournament goes on, 32 teams begin their quest for football's top international prize. In an era where fans of the biggger clubs have become cynical about Internationals this really is the main event, forget Champions League, Premiership, Serie A etc.

Predictions? Well, everybody is tipping Brazil and its difficult to see anybody else winning it, the defensive pairing of Lucio and Juan isn't the most inspiring in the competition but I suspect most attention will be at the other end with Kaka, Adriano and the two Ronnies keeping defences and spectators attention.

What about England? To be honest I think this is our best chance since 1970, nearly all our squad has either tournament or European club football experience and if we can overcome Germany, Argentina and Brazil in the knockout stages FIFA should give us the cup!

Dark Horses? I don't think we'll see a repeat of four years ago when South Korea nearly pulled off a shock in their own co-hosted tournament, but I would like Spain to do better than normal. Given the talent in their squad they should get to at least the Quarter Finals and after that who knows?
